Club Blog Launching Night

14 April 2009

The President began her speech by sharing with us on the word “limitation”. The only thing that limits achievement is the thought that we can’t achieve. People who says they can, they can and people who says they can’t, they can’t. Whatever limitations we place upon ourselves are our responsibility. If you have not achieved the goals that you have set in Toastmasters, take a look at it now. Are you putting a limitation to yourself? If yes, change your thoughts. If no, move on.

14 April was also a special day for our club as we officially launched our club blog with a cake cutting ceremony by the current and past President that was around on that night. The President also thanked the Webmaster, Chin Kit Ping, Assistant Webmaster, Jason Teh, Public Relations, Lim Thian Seng, photographer, Olga Eng for a job well done. She also thanked members who have contributed to the blog.

Our TME for the night was a chartered member of the club, ACS Lim Thian Seng. We were entertained by him for the whole night with his sense of humour. Kay Wong, CTM as the Table Topic Master did a great job by preparing topics that is very challenging and of contest standards. No doubt that the topics were a bit difficult, we even have two guests who attempted the table topics. Nonetheless, our season table topic speaker Dr Devi Menon was voted as the Best Table Topics Speaker.

Our new member, Tan Wooi Hong did his second speech with a very unique title G.A.T. This is an acronym for Goal, Action and Timeline. In his speech, he shared with us that in life we must visualize and set the goal and then work towards it. We need to follow Nike’s tagline “Just Do It”. In order to achieve the goal, we must also set a timeline for ourselves.

Christine Ngiam, ACS, CL presented a speech in the Advanced Communication Manual in Public Relations #3 Persuasive Approach with the speech title “Learning By Doing”. She presented some facts and figures on the number of times members have done the speech evaluation in the club. It was noted that some senior members have been playing the role of an evaluator regularly where as our newer members are lacking in this role. She cited that the newer members should take the opportunity to do it. Just like the title goes, “Learning by Doing” is the best way of learning especially when we have just completed the Effective Evaluation Workshop on 11 April 2009. Remember, Practice Makes Perfect.

General Evaluator, Suresh Mohan. ACB, CL from Sai Masters Toastmasters Club also gave his 2 cents worth in his evaluation report. Very thorough evaluation and good feedback.

Message from the Division Governor

Good day to all of you.   T here was once myself and NJ Singam (past  convention   organizing  Chair) went to one of the local bank to close the  convention  bank account. When we went to the counter, we informed the officer about the matter and she handed us 2 forms for us to initial it. Then she obtained our Identification Card for verification. Just within 4 minutes, the officer handed us the remaining balance and told us that, the account was closed. It was a total contrast, if we compared with opening a bank account, where we had to fill few forms, go through few  verification  and approvals prior to opening an account. The entire process took almost 2.5hours compared to closure of account which lasted only for 5 minutes.     We often forget or never ponder on the  initiator  of the club and their sacrifice &  hard work  to charter the club and we just need a single sheet of paper to close a ...

Ask, Believe and Receive

"I am so happy and grateful that I have a beautiful family and beautiful career" - Jade In the Toastmasters meeting last night, Jean asked us to write down what makes us feel happy and grateful about. A young and cheerful lady, at the age of 23 has unlocked the secret of happiness when she listened to the CD of The Secret, by Rhonda Bryne. She concluded her speech that the secret of happiness is  ASK, BELIEVE, RECEIVE . Her speech reminded me that how blessed I am with what I have now and that is true happiness. When we are grateful, we are at the state of happiness. I am counting and appreciate the blessing that I have. The recent flight tragedies that happened strike me with a realization that we do not know when we may face calamity. Therefore, count our blessing at every single moment of our life. “Happiness is right here, right now, in this moment."  ―  Buddha Teaching Article by Jade Lim, CC, CL ~Jade is a mother with three beau...
