An INCREDIBLE Meeting@13 July 2010

Dear Fellow Indrahanians,

We had a great meeting last night, didn't we?

The first meeting of the 2010-2011 term did signal a new beginning! Both the President and the VP Education were the first to arrive at the meeting venue, and Dominic Joseph was heard to remark “Incredible” – the first known usage of the word-of-the-day!

Once the SAA, Fanny trumpeted the start of our Meeting, the President stepped forward to deliver a meaningful message about how our own world is interrelated and connected, and how, if we are not careful, our own ego can rupture this harmony and we ended up losing everything. She related a simple story of how the trees in a forest grew vain and ended up being chopped down by a wood-cutter because the former had chased away the wild animals that used to gather around the trees. Kay is special because she has a very good narrative style and when she spoke – she reminded me of a painter and with confident strokes of her brush and a palette of riotous colors, she transformed an empty canvass into this Big Picture we call Life. Somehow, when she speaks, I notice there are always Life’s lessons that we can take home.

Choi Woon took over as the TME, and she explained to everyone how this meeting will be conducted, and made the necessary introductions. Koon Kow took over control and gave us a fusillade of jokes to get the audience going, and obviously it worked because there were peals of laughter around the room.
We had three speeches this time around: Fanny and Victor delivered CC speech # 2: Organize. Your Speech, followed by Karen who did speech # 3: Get to the Point. Personally, I felt all the speeches were really good, and I enjoyed all of them (hee hee, including mine!). Fanny gave a sold presentation (she did this speech a second time) – in fact, she won the Best Assignment Speaker ribbon – and the others were equally good. Victor with his flair of speaking, kept it intentionally simple and direct, while Karen produced vivid descriptions of nature in an urban environment. When she spoke, I closed my eyes and I actually felt very relaxed.
This was followed by the Table Topics session, conducted by Jade Lim, and she took on the role in superb fashion and at short notice! Good job, Jade – her theme was on “happiness”. Good participation from the audience as always! By the way, May Yong won the Best Table Topics Speaker ribbon!

A short 10-minute break and then evaluation time. The General Evaluator, Jamila Khan, ACS CL took the stage – I am grateful to her for attending our meeting at such short notice – and she wasted no time in getting the various role players to provide their feedback. Dr. Choong as Table Topics evaluator gave good pointers; the speech evaluators (May, Yeoh and Thian Seng) were brilliant; the Grammarian (i.e. Dominic Joseph) was incredibly clever with his language evaluation; the Ah Counter (i.e. Christine) was detailed to the last ahs and erms; the Timer (i.e Alice) kept her report short and sweet; and last but certainly not least, Jamila was generous in her compliments to this proud club – in fact, she described her experience as fun, and that she genuinely enjoyed our meeting! Wow, I was so touched when I heard her praise that tears welled in my eyes. As you know this was my first meeting that I organized as a VP Education, and together with Kay and the other Exco members, we were determined to make this a memorable maiden meeting. I believe we did!
Oh yes, we sang a rousing Birthday Song to Durai and Kevin – our July "babies", and in the spirit of happiness that Jade had decreed in the Table Topics – there were hearty hugs, charming cuddles and friendly embraces all around. It left all of us with a warm feeling.

So for those of you who were there last night (there were twenty of us – seventeen of us are Indrahanians!), I trust you had a fabulous time. For those who missed the meeting – too bad but pencil us down for our next meeting on July 27, and we will have another wonderful meeting that is a trademark of Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club. See you soon!

Ice Breaker Speech: Myself by Ang Poon Kenn

Good evening everyone, my name is Ang Poon Kenn, everyone calls me Ken. Today, the title of my speech is about Myself. As far as I could recall, me parents were not staying with me since I was 3 years old; they went overseas and started their new working life for some reason, and did not come back ever since. I'm staying with my grandmother, and she look after my elder brother, younger sister and me. I actually have not met my parents for more than 18 years and only communicate through the phone and social media. Can you imagine, 15 years of not seeing your own parents? 18 years of not having parents around the house, school and life. My grandmother take over my mother's role, she does all the housework for us. She takes care of us. My relative, they are not rich but they sponsor me for my education and pocket money. However, even though I have the love from my grandmother and relatives, I felt that I'm different from others. They have parents accompany them during...
