Meeting on 24 Nov

Dear Indrahanians Greetings to you. Do you ever wish that you could do with a bit of relaxing after a hard day's work? Sure, you could go drinking or partying or have dinner with friends. Or you could go to a play, or a comedy show - but then you'd have to pay a hefty sum for it. Well, you could just have come to our Toastmasters meeting last Tuesday on 8 Dec & you'd have had a whole night of belly laughs & learning, that would have cost you almost nothing! Do you know, we had so many DTMs (Fong Ming, LeAnn, Dom & Dr Devi) & past Presidents (I'm sorry, I can't even keep count with all my fingers!) on that night - it was unbelieveable. In fact, there were so many high-flying members, they were quite unruly & dominating. The SAA (your truly, who had to stand in for Jenny) had to use the gavel persistently to call the room to order. That's for starters. We had 4 guests, 3 of whom were thanks to Koon Kow. One of them was even game to take part in

We hope ALL of you will participate actively in this program by joining us. Please choose the dates that suit you. Do you want to take up any role or just wish to visit as guest? I will contact the selected club Presidents and VPE for the arrangement. Thank you. Han

Meeting on 10 November 2009

Dear Indrahanians, Greetings to you. During our above meeting on 10 Nov, we almost had a speech marathon. We had 4 wonderful assigned speeches to learn from - tips on anti-burglary, advice on financial management, ask your own self for all the answers you need, & how to handle a radio talk show. Each of the speaker spoke so well, that I'm sure it was a tough choice for all of us when it came to choosing the Best Speaker Award. The fact that Yuan won shows that she's one of our up & coming young speakers in the club. Ditto for the evaluators - all of them performed well. So it was equally difficult to vote. Another point I noted was that members who weren't playing roles that night, were very proactive in volunteering for the limited Table Topics slots. So overall, I'd say that the standard of speaking quality that night was very high indeed. So let's all continue this standard so that Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club continues to be known as the premier spe

Meeting on 27 October 2009

Dear Indrahanians, Greetings to you. Last meeting we had one of the most unusual Table Topics Sessions I've ever attended. It was conducted by Jen. She gave out a few topics & participants were supposed to tell us a lie based on those topics. Basically Jen wanted us to tell a Tall Tale. A tall tale is a story with unbelievable elements but told in such a way that it could be true. So you can believe it or not. During the session, you could tell who are the true liars (a.k.a. Dominic), those who can't a tell a lie in their honest-to-goodness life (a.k.a. Alice), those who try but didn't quite succeed (a.k.a. Dr Choong), and those who are probably true blue liars - like our guest Victor and our very own Yuan. For the record, Yuan won the Table Topics Award that night. Congrats to Yuan for being such a good liar! And kudos to Jen for such an entertaining session. Those of us who were present had a 'belly' good laugh. Anan gave his ice breaker speech. Those of you f

Meeting On 13 October 2009

Hi Indrahanians, I feel sorry for those of you members who missed our Deepavali Toastmasters meeting on 13 Oct. Why? Well for one thing it was the Indian food we had. It was also the super-divine homemade choc chip cookies brought by Teresa’s guest, Audrey. They just melt in your mouth…I’m salivating still. Then we also had members & guests dressing up for the occasion. We all got to wear the little Indian do on our “third eye” (sorry I forgot what it’s called!) We looked veritably like our Indian friends. In fact May looked like she’s married to an Indian husband. Dr Devi was in her glorious saree & she started with an invocation regarding the light of Deepavali. My understanding of it is that this light symbolises the light that lights our path along our spiritual journey. We had two ice breakers from two of our new members – they were so well done with such interesting insights into their lives, they deserve the standing ovation. Our GE, Meyya, was a bundle of high energ

Meeting on 22 September 2009

Hi Indrahanians, On Monday morning, just before I woke up at 10.30 am (hehe), I had my last dream of the morning. I dreamt that we were having our Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club meeting during our special Guest Night. We had a huge turnout of about 30 guests and 20+ of us members, making a total of 50+ people at the meeting. It was a record breaking night where we had to sit classroom style - it was exactly like my school classroom where we sat in pairs with little tables in front of us. I was sitting next to Alice & we were animatedly discussing our guest turnout. Of course none of the above is true except that we did just have our Guest Night last week, & it was probably my subconcious mind telling me I haven't written my report to you yet about that exciting event on the night of 29 Sept! So here goes... Yes we did have a big turnout - 21 members & 11 guests. We had to open up the back room to cater to the extra people. First the food - it was scrumptious. What wi

Meeting on 8 September 2009

Dear Indrahanians, Our Toastmasters meeting last week was another week of learning from our members & guests. We learned a little bit more about Fanny's childhood from her icebreaker. Shyly but confidently she read out her speech, which was a great starter point for her Toastmasters journey. I'm sure she'll be better & better as she moves along. LeAnn shared with us something very personal to her - something that she rarely shares with others (so I'm sorry that many of you members missed out on it!). We wish her all the best on her spiritual journey. I believe we are soon to have a couple more new members in our club - Sim is rejoining our fold; Durai's son, Anand, is likely to join in our next meeting (otherwise, we shall "blackmail" Durai!) FYI, Anand won the "Best Table Topic" ribbon that evening - great way to go for a beginner. Wooi Hong tried out his first Humour Master role & was also awarded Half CC that evening. So do send hi

Meeting on 28 July 2009

Dear Taman Indrahanians & Guests, A round of applause to our club for having our first new member of the term on the night of our 28 July meeting – Mellen Koh. I’m sure many of you would have welcomed on board by now. Here’s a re-cap of the highlights of the evening: 1. Thian Seng set the main meeting going with a very thought-provoking invocation. A key question we should all start thinking & doing is: “How would you write your own Obituary?” Because how you write it now is how you live now. (I have done mine – because I also learned this from a seminar I attended. So over to you.) 2. We had the Ice Breaker from Kevin. It was really an insight into what makes Kevin tick & click. He’s a very dynamic, young entrepreneur who should be able to teach us a thing or two about business development, whilst we share our Toastmasters journey with him. I think we should induct him into our fund-raising projects for the club. 3. Yuan was doing only her second speech & it t

The Flight of the Canadian Geese

VPE’s Message for 2009/2010 "The Flight of the Canadian Geese" More than 25 years ago I was travelling in Eastern Canada in autumn. Autumn in Canada is one of the most beautiful experiences in my life because all the maple leaves turn into different shades of golden colour. Another astounding experience I had was to see the Canadian geese migrating from the East to the West for the warmer weather. Now, fellow Toastmasters, for your information Canadian geese fly in a fascinating V-formation with a loud honking sound. Observe closely & you’ll see that after some time the lead goose at the tip of the V will fly to the back of the wing & another goose takes over the lead. This goes on continuously & consistently throughout their flight. At that time none of us could explain why all this was happening. Much later I found out why. When geese fly together as a group in V-formation, they have a better lifting power. When they fly on their own, they will feel drag & r

New beginning

Dear Taman Indrahanians, Friends & Guests, July 14 was the first meeting of our new term. It’s a shame if you missed it cos our new Prez Han gave his inaugural speech. For those who did attend, I hope you enjoyed the meeting & learning. It was a night of continuous lifelong learning, shared with us by the many veterans of Toastmasters: 1. It was actually the first time I’ve seen Dominic in action as TME of our club. He set a clear objective for the meeting, ie to end the meeting by 9.30 pm – we almost achieved it! We all learned to improve on our time management, & shall continue to do so. 2. Dr Devi gave a very thought provoking Invocation by challenging us to question whether we live our lives based on fear or Faith. 3. Thian Seng shared a very powerful speech with us – “I have a Dream” by Martin Luther King & his evaluator Fong Ming gave a very pertinent opinion on his delivery. I totally agreed with her evaluation. 4. LeAnn was her usual enthusiastic sel

The Final Episode

30 June 2009 All good things must come to an end. So here we were at our last meeting right smack on 30 June 2009, the last date of the Toastmasters term 2008/2009. To be honest, it was a blurry episode for the first half of the meeting for me as I was about to present my final speech in the Interpretive Reading manual, “The Monodrama”. I am usually in a daze towards the surroundings before delivering my assignment speeches, but the haze clears immediately after I have completed the speech. Having been tasked by Madam President to be a roving reporter, this is what I could remember of the meeting. Choi Woon delivered her Presidential Address (or rather Presidential Farewell) with gusto and emotion, telling the members how much she enjoyed her term as President of Taman Indrahana club along with the trials and tribulations, and how she had personally benefited from the experience. As a leader, she urged the members, “Do not stop at where you are. Move on to complete your competent commu

Induction of New Member

12 May 2009 The meeting started at 7.30p.m. The TME for this evening was Teresa Chan, ACS, CL. Although she has been out of action for sometime, she was able to play this role well. The meeting started with Vice President Public Relations, Jade Lim, CC conducting the induction ceremony meant for three new members. However, only one new member, Khor Hong Yuan was inducted. The Table Table Topic Master, Chin Kit Ping, CC has conducted this session with some topics of contest standard. Out of the 5 speakers, three topics were attempted by the guest who was present for the night. Two of the guest who attempted the topics was here for the first time and they really enjoy this session. The first speech was an Ice Breaker Speech delivered by Khor Hong Yuan, TM with her speech title “A Snip in my life”. She shared with us on a part of her working life. Her first job evolved around the lab analyzing virus. In her speech she told us why she moved away from this job and entered the Sales front.

Club Blog Launching Night

14 April 2009 The President began her speech by sharing with us on the word “limitation”. The only thing that limits achievement is the thought that we can’t achieve. People who says they can, they can and people who says they can’t, they can’t. Whatever limitations we place upon ourselves are our responsibility. If you have not achieved the goals that you have set in Toastmasters, take a look at it now. Are you putting a limitation to yourself? If yes, change your thoughts. If no, move on. 14 April was also a special day for our club as we officially launched our club blog with a cake cutting ceremony by the current and past President that was around on that night. The President also thanked the Webmaster, Chin Kit Ping, Assistant Webmaster, Jason Teh, Public Relations, Lim Thian Seng, photographer, Olga Eng for a job well done. She also thanked members who have contributed to the blog. Our TME for the night was a chartered member of the club, ACS Lim Thian Sen

Voice of Indrahanians - My 2 Cents

The toastmaster club was a chance incident that Patrick Daya over the course of a dinner spoke to me about. It was sometime in Oct’08. I have heard about Toast Masters Clubs long before this but had never had the opportunity of having one of my friend/colleague actually being actively involved in one. So out of curiosity I asked him if he could bring me along. He kindly did. As we were both from the same office building, I trailed him to the venue. It was a great first time experience – my first visit as a guest, in November 08. Besides Patrick was really a very solicitous host, Jen Wong, Jade, Choi Woon and Yeoh went out of their way to make me feel at home. The speeches that day was from May and Patrick. I remembered how supportive and nurturing the environment was. There was no sense of threat and comments/critique were given sincerely and received good naturedly. It was a very positive experience indeed. I attended another 2 sessions, this time bringing my

How Does Toastmasters Works?

How Does It Work? Toastmasters makes learning fun! This non-profit organization offers a proven – and enjoyable – way to practice communication and leadership skills. Here's how it works: A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a friendly atmosphere. A typical group has 20 to 40 members who meet weekly or biweekly to practice public speaking techniques. The average meeting lasts one hour. Members learn communication skills by working in the Competent Communication manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignments designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking. Participants learn skills related to use of humor, gestures, eye contact, speech organization and overall delivery. When finished with this manual, members can choose from 15 advanced manuals to learn skills related to specific interests. Members also learn leadership skills by taking on various meeting roles and serving as office

Making Effective Communication a Reality

In October 1924, a group of men assembled by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley met in the basement of the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, U.S.A., forming a club “to afford practice and training in the art of public speaking and in presiding over meetings, and to promote sociability and good fellowship among its members.” The group took the name “Toastmasters.” We are a local chapter of Toastmasters International . Today, Toastmasters International is a non-profit organization which gives its members the opportunity to develop and improve their public speaking abilities through local club meetings, training seminars and speech contests. Toastmasters International includes more than 199,000 men and women in more than 9,300 clubs in more than 70 countries. Experienced professionals and beginning speakers alike can benefit from our practical, face-to-face learning program. Whether you're speaking to the board of directors, your customers, your co-workers or your kids, Toastmasters can help you do it

Ong Night 20 Jan 2009

"Ong" in Hokkien means prosperity. Tonight was indeed a great night to be celebrated. It was just a few days away before Lunar New Year. Member’s attendance was good with a few guest attending the "Ong" night dressed in red and yellow. Fun meeting on "ONG" night As this is an auspicious (OXspicious) day, the entrance fee was made at RM 8.80 per pax (for non-member only) with "LOW SANG" (tossing raw fish) as to generate more prosperity. The meeting room was well decorated to reflect the theme "ONG". Nicely decorated meeting room with "ONG" Highlights of the nights: Le Ann Tang, DTM kicked off the event with an interesting introduction on toastmaster's history. She had made the evening a fun learning environment where everyone enjoyed "ONG" night thoroughly. An interesting table topics session held by Jade, with all the table topics stuf
