Dear Indrahanians,
Today’s meeting saw only 19 of us in attendance – not the usual crowd of more than 25 people, but still more than decent – and Fanny kicked off the meeting with a smile, an announcement and a gavel. Ever the animal lover, President Kay Wong narrated a story about the wolf, jackal and tiger. Basically she is telling us that it does not matter who we are but that Toastmasters provide a supportive environment that is empowering, encouraging and emboldening.
Thian Seng came next and entertained us with his brand of “humor”, followed by the three assignment speeches. Victor Ong started the ball rolling with a sad story of his heartbreak (CC Speech # 6: Vocal Variety), followed by a guest speaker from Crystal Toastmasters, Laychi Low, who did an impromptu speech (Speech # 1: Speak Off the Cuff from the Advanced manual, “Specialty Speeches”, and last but not least, Lim Thian Seng who delivered his “humorous” speech (Speech # 2: Leave Them With a Smile from the Advanced manual, “Humorously Speaking”). I must admit that all three gave solid performances that spoke of their confidence, fluency and oratory. In fact, our General Evaluator, Dr. Devi Menon, DTM made this very believable claim, that all the 3 speeches were well-rehearsed!
I must record my gratitude to Dr. Devi for graciously stepping in to be our GE when Lorna Fisher (our original GE) was not able to make it to our meeting at the eleventh hour. In fact, she took on a double role – not only as the GE but also as the Language Evaluator. In retrospect, it was great to have one of our own to be the GE since we have always been relying on external GE’s to undertake the job.
Table Topics was ably handled by Hong Yuan and indeed it was a pleasure to have her back in our midst after an enforced absence (“work” that’s why). She summoned 5 speakers and they did not disappoint.
Koon Kow was the Table Topics Evaluator and the three evaluators – May Yong, Yeoh Cheng Lim and Kay Wong respectively – followed immediately after. The Ah Counter Report was presented by Fanny and the Timer’s Report was by Karen Sze Tho.
Oh yes, we also had a simple birthday celebration for our July and August “babies”, complete with a yummy cake that had us all smiling with sinful pleasure! And Weng May has announced that she is joining us as a full-fledged member of Taman Indrahana! This girl’s smart and this decision of hers was discerning, enlightened and wise!
A special agenda on the evening was the presentation of Club's budget by the Treasurer KK. He presented Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club Budget for the period July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011 and the budget was approved by members who present.
All in all, we have had a delightful meeting that I am sure, was enjoyed by those who came. I trust I will see all of you again on September 14! C’mon everybody – let’s try to make it a perfect 20 for the next meeting – and a perfect 20 means 20 fun-loving Indrahanians flocking to Cobra Club, no less!
Kind regards,
Victor Ong, Vice President Education 2010-2011
