Dear Fellow Indrahanians,
Our November 23rd meeting was another qualified success. Like all Taman Indrahana meetings. Here we participated, we learned and we shared. Kay Wong started the ball rolling with her presidential address – she was telling us about Darren Le Croix and how he went from “chump to champ”. As she pointed out, if an ordinary guy like Darren could make it, so can we. She listed out seven great tips from Darren: (1) What is your intent? What do you want to share with your audience? (2) Are you in the dialogue (3) What would I give if this is to be my last presentation? (4) Never turn down stage-time! Never say, No! (5) Record yourself every time you speak – so you can look back and review (6) Be humble, and (7) Crave for feedback. Many of these pointers resonated with us because they made sense. Anyway, these were indeed invaluable lessons, and I know we took them to heart.
Teresa Chan took the stage next as Toastmaster-of-the-Evening, and it was great to have her back. She had great appeal and charm and given her cheerful demeanor, she reached out to connect with the audience quite easily. She was followed by Alice Ong who took on the role of Humor Master – the manner in which she related the “Tall Tales” episodes was riddled with deadpan humor that we just had to pay rapt attention to.
Then this was followed by three project speeches. Karen Sze Tho came first with her speech on “Fear”, followed by Victor Ong’s “The Stench of Death” and finally, Weng May delivered her first advanced speech from the “Humorously Speaking” manual, an interesting speech titled “When things get too close”. Weng May certainly did warm us up to her brand of humor, showcasing her ability to entertain us. Needless to say, Karen was voted the Best Project Speaker.
Yeoh Cheng Lim then came forward to conduct the Table Topics session, and he dished out idioms that four participants could pick in order to fashion a 2-minute impromptu speech. Durai won the Best Table Topics Speaker ribbon this time around – he is proving to be a good impromptu speaker.
Evaluations came after the speeches and everyone did their respective parts as well as can be expected. It was also great that Mike Cheang, the President of HICT Toastmasters agreed to be our last-minute General Evaluator, and as he wrapped up the meeting, he gave us a deserved thumbs-up. So, overall, another great Indrahanian meeting that was rich in participation, learning and sharing.
Thanks and kind regards,
Victor Ong,
Vice president Education 2010-2011
