Of integrity and friendship

The core values of Toastmasters International are Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence. I have truly witnessed the quality of Toastmasters at the recent International Toastmasters Convention 2014 (“ITC 2014”) held from 20th – 23rd August 2014 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
As a first timer to the ITC 2014, I was excited to experience the educational and leadership programmes in store and to meet new friends. On the second day of the convention, after a delightful shopping spree for our Taman Indrahana club's inventory at the Toastmasters Marketplace, I entered a hall to attend an educational talk.

Suddenly, I realized that I had lost one of my bags (Oh no !). I remembered I left it at the Toastmasters Marketplace. I swiftly rushed back to the Marketplace (it is about 5-8 minutes’ walk from the hall). On my way there, I fervently hoped that my belongings were still there. My mind started to prepare for the worst case scenario by thinking what I should do next if I couldn't recover my belongings.

From a slow walk to a brisk walk to a power walk, for that seemed a short but long distance under the circumstances, I wished I was  Sonic the Hedgehog to transport myself to the Marketplace immediately (or teleport myself there if I had the superpower).  Upon arriving at the Marketplace, I saw my red woven bag on the table from afar. However, I realized there was a guy standing next to my bag. I greeted the guy and realized that he had been waiting for the owner of the bag to come and claim it. We introduced ourselves and I was so indebted to him for his great help to look after my belongings. He, David, was also another shopper at the Marketplace and he missed the educational talk just to wait for me!

I thanked David for his help and felt relieved and grateful to be able to meet fellow Toastmasters who share the same interest in the communication and leadership programme as well as the core values. He exemplified such values and inspired me with integrity and friendship. Thanks, David for your great help!
This is one of the valuable lessons I learnt at ITC 2014 –  great integrity and friendship!

Ice Breaker Speech: Myself by Ang Poon Kenn

Good evening everyone, my name is Ang Poon Kenn, everyone calls me Ken. Today, the title of my speech is about Myself. As far as I could recall, me parents were not staying with me since I was 3 years old; they went overseas and started their new working life for some reason, and did not come back ever since. I'm staying with my grandmother, and she look after my elder brother, younger sister and me. I actually have not met my parents for more than 18 years and only communicate through the phone and social media. Can you imagine, 15 years of not seeing your own parents? 18 years of not having parents around the house, school and life. My grandmother take over my mother's role, she does all the housework for us. She takes care of us. My relative, they are not rich but they sponsor me for my education and pocket money. However, even though I have the love from my grandmother and relatives, I felt that I'm different from others. They have parents accompany them during...
