New beginning

Dear Taman Indrahanians, Friends & Guests,

July 14 was the first meeting of our new term. It’s a shame if you missed it cos our new Prez Han gave his inaugural speech. For those who did attend, I hope you enjoyed the meeting & learning.

It was a night of continuous lifelong learning, shared with us by the many veterans of Toastmasters:

1. It was actually the first time I’ve seen Dominic in action as TME of our club. He set a clear objective for the meeting, ie to end the meeting by 9.30 pm – we almost achieved it! We all learned to improve on our time management, & shall continue to do so.

2. Dr Devi gave a very thought provoking Invocation by challenging us to question whether we live our lives based on fear or Faith.

3. Thian Seng shared a very powerful speech with us – “I have a Dream” by Martin Luther King & his evaluator Fong Ming gave a very pertinent opinion on his delivery. I totally agreed with her evaluation.

4. LeAnn was her usual enthusiastic self in sharing what the Toastmasters journey was all about. It was very enlightening for our 5 guests who came in pretty clueless on Toastmasters, but ended up with strong indications to join our club. (Thian Seng will now have opportunities to pursue 5 ladies!)

5. I like the way Koon Kow picked on the theme of the meeting of “lifelong learning” & proceeded to have table topics related to it.

6. Our GE as well as Alice provided so much impromptu wit & humour throughout the 2nd half of the meeting that we didn’t have time for the Humour Master, Kit Ping, to come on board!

As VPE, I also launched the “Most Improved Table Topics Speaker” campaign. One winner will be announced after every quarter. The winner must have improved from her/his first TT speech within that quarter, & must have spoken at least 3 times, or once a month in that period.

Koon Kow managed to get 6 members to kick start the campaign. So go for it, all you fellow members. Yours truly will be monitoring every meeting & final decision will be made by the EXCO of course.

Our EXCO 2009/2010 team are definitely committed to ending all our meetings on time at 9.30pm – so that members can enjoy our Toastmasters meetings and at the same time go home early to be with their loved ones (or go partying after that). So we hope all members can cooperate by sticking to their allocated timing in all future meetings.

See you all on our next meeting, 28 July 2009, for more individual learning.

May all great blessings come your way.

Ice Breaker Speech: Myself by Ang Poon Kenn

Good evening everyone, my name is Ang Poon Kenn, everyone calls me Ken. Today, the title of my speech is about Myself. As far as I could recall, me parents were not staying with me since I was 3 years old; they went overseas and started their new working life for some reason, and did not come back ever since. I'm staying with my grandmother, and she look after my elder brother, younger sister and me. I actually have not met my parents for more than 18 years and only communicate through the phone and social media. Can you imagine, 15 years of not seeing your own parents? 18 years of not having parents around the house, school and life. My grandmother take over my mother's role, she does all the housework for us. She takes care of us. My relative, they are not rich but they sponsor me for my education and pocket money. However, even though I have the love from my grandmother and relatives, I felt that I'm different from others. They have parents accompany them during...
