Meeting on 27 April 2010

Dear Indrahanians,

The opening lines of our GE, Geoff Andrew, went like this:

“Flatter me and I may not believe you. Criticise me and I may not like you. Encourage me and I’ll never forget you.”

And that set the tone for the whole evening.

First I’d like to extend huge CONGRATULATIONS to Anand who did such a fabulous job in his inaugural role as TME. He was a real cool dude. He prepared his script thoroughly – full of stories, analogies and anecdotes (how the eagle learned to fly, how the astronauts went to outer space & back, etc). He was also able to capture nuances and highlights from each speaker, and then added spicy commentaries to them

(Samy Vellu & The Highwayman).
Well done, Anand. May you develop higher and further on your Toastmaster journey:-)
Chrristine created another milestone as Table Topic Master by conducting a mini debate between the 2 sides of the room. The topic was: “The greeting card doesn’t
have a role to play in the digital age.”

Brave souls who took on this debate were Jen/Dom/Anand vs LeAnn/Alice/Dr Choong. Anand went on to win the Best Table Topic award. Another round of applause for

Anand. I’m sure Durai, sitting quietly in the room, was very proud of him.
There were 2 advanced speeches. Thian Seng is working towards his Gold, & Kay her Silver. I believe both still have a long way to go:-( But kudos to LeAnn & Jade who gave constructive feedback to both (especially Jade, considering she’s been absent
for so long from the scene – she hasn’t lost her touch:-))

Thereafter, Div. B International Speech Champ, Dennis Wee, presented his practice run for the Miri District contest. I’m sure he received a lot of valuable feedback from our members to help him improve his speech further. Let’s wish him all the best in Miri & hope that he can bring glory to Div. B:-)

Geoff returned towards the end with his team together with his encouraging evaluations – as I said before, without notes. Thanks to Geoff for demonstrating his skills.

I’m sure we all had fun learning a thing or two that night. And thanks to Alice & Yeoh who stood in as replacement role players.

See you all around in our next meeting!

May all great blessings come your way.

Ice Breaker Speech: Myself by Ang Poon Kenn

Good evening everyone, my name is Ang Poon Kenn, everyone calls me Ken. Today, the title of my speech is about Myself. As far as I could recall, me parents were not staying with me since I was 3 years old; they went overseas and started their new working life for some reason, and did not come back ever since. I'm staying with my grandmother, and she look after my elder brother, younger sister and me. I actually have not met my parents for more than 18 years and only communicate through the phone and social media. Can you imagine, 15 years of not seeing your own parents? 18 years of not having parents around the house, school and life. My grandmother take over my mother's role, she does all the housework for us. She takes care of us. My relative, they are not rich but they sponsor me for my education and pocket money. However, even though I have the love from my grandmother and relatives, I felt that I'm different from others. They have parents accompany them during...
