Division B Humorous Speech and Speech Evaluation Contest!

Taman Indrahana sent two fantastic speakers out for the Division B contest held on the 24 of September 2011 at Taylor's University Lakeside Campus. Our funny guy, Han Lee Hwee was competing in the Humorous Speech Contest while Ng Jean Hui was competing in what she does best, the Evaluation Speech Contest.
The evaluation contest started out first. Kenneth Yee as the test speaker gave his speech titled "When I realised... " In his speech, he talked about the Pain and Pleasure that every human will face in their lives and how these two factors affect each one of them in making decisions. Jean was up against many senior toastmasters such as Ng Sok Teng from Crystal Toastmasters Club, Sarimah Morshidi, Dennis Wee and Nor Lida Dahalan. Jean was cool and calm when it was her turn to evaluate Kenneth. She spoke with clarity and gave strong point regarding his strengths and areas of improvement. Loud applause was given to her as she was done. 

Next came the Humorous Speech contest. The contestants were Chong Mei Wen, Han Lee Hwee, Dennis Wee, Johnson Yike and lastly Sarimah Morshidi. All of them tickled our funny bone with hilarious speeches that includes events that occur with the family, work bosses and their experiences in being a toastmaster.

Stephen Fernando was in the house to give us a short 15 minutes talk on tips in presenting a humorous speech. A past district champion came in a gave us a few good laughs during his presentation. As a natural funny guy, he made learning so easy and fun. I m sure all the participants there were amazed on his delivery and definitely had something to bring home at the end of the day.

Results for the Evaluation Contest:
Champion: Dennis Wee (D'Utama Advanced)
1st Runner Up: Ng Sok Teng (Crystal)
2nd Runner Up: Ng Jean Hui (Taman Indrahana)

For the Humorous Speech Contest:
Champion: Dennis Wee (D'Utama Advanced)
1st Runner Up: Johnson Yike (Pheonix)
2nd Runner Up: Sarimah Morshidi

Overall, a great saturday and congratulate Jean for being the 2nd Runner Up, and her bravery to step up to the challenge. And Han, although he wasnt placed, but all the effort and time used for the preparation deserves recognition. Well done both of you! The club is proud for having young and experienced toastmasters in the club as we move forward in being a better club.

Voice of Indrahanians - My 2 Cents

The toastmaster club was a chance incident that Patrick Daya over the course of a dinner spoke to me about. It was sometime in Oct’08. I have heard about Toast Masters Clubs long before this but had never had the opportunity of having one of my friend/colleague actually being actively involved in one. So out of curiosity I asked him if he could bring me along. He kindly did. As we were both from the same office building, I trailed him to the venue. It was a great first time experience – my first visit as a guest, in November 08. Besides Patrick was really a very solicitous host, Jen Wong, Jade, Choi Woon and Yeoh went out of their way to make me feel at home. The speeches that day was from May and Patrick. I remembered how supportive and nurturing the environment was. There was no sense of threat and comments/critique were given sincerely and received good naturedly. What a scintillating Meeting@27July'10!

Dear Indrahanians & DTM Sivalingam, Last evening, Thian Seng came first, followed by Victor Ong to set up the meeting room. Soon after, the others trooped in – and very soon, we were ready to begin. Kay Wong’s presidential address is always a delight to hear because she uses stories to draw us in; stories that make us ponder and reflect. And when she’s finished with her narration, a lesson will have been imprinted in our consciousness! Our Immediate Past President and Area B2 Governor, Han Lee Hwee took control of the meeting as TME, and he too launched another short story. I tell you – we do have engaging storytellers at Taman Indrahana and they are all talented. And then we had Alice Ong in her familiar role as Humor Master.
