Power up and mentoring in toastmasters club

mentoring

Meeting has long adjourned but the mentoring session just started. The photo was captured at one of the toastmasters meetings held recently. The passion of the mentors and the eagerness of learning of the mentees prompted me to snap this photo. The above sharing session lasted for about 30-40 minutes after the meeting adjourned.

Mentoring is an essential part of Toastmasters movement as it helps new member to learn, master and hone public speaking and leadership skills. Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club has a well-balanced blend of experienced and new members. Recently, the author did an analysis, the median of the toastmastering experience of Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Clubs' members is 8 years! (methodology: median = total duration of toastmastering experience of all members/all members)

The figure means that when new members join Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club, they can instantly tap into the rich experience of veteran toastmasters of the club. (some sort like power up/turbo charge in gaming term).

New member's experience charges up to 8 years in Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club

This is just a figurative analysis for your reference only as the improvement and advancement of members in toastmasters club depending on the initiative of each individual. Members need to actively involve in delivering speech, learning and achieving the objectives of each project and taking up meeting roles as these are pivotal for them to develop and grow in communication and leadership skills.

Through the mentoring system in toastmasters club, mentors guide new members to accustom to club educational program, develop confidence in public speaking skills and leading them with good exemplary as a toastmasters/public speaker/good communicator/leader and a friend. Mentee can acquire the necessary information and assistance from mentor/senior toastmastmasters instantly or whenever they want. On the other hand, mentors refine, reinforce, revitalize their skills and learn new information from mentees.

Hand in hand, all of us can grow together and becoming effective communicators and leaders as express in the mission of Toastmasters International:-

We empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders.

Ice Breaker Speech: Myself by Ang Poon Kenn

Good evening everyone, my name is Ang Poon Kenn, everyone calls me Ken. Today, the title of my speech is about Myself. As far as I could recall, me parents were not staying with me since I was 3 years old; they went overseas and started their new working life for some reason, and did not come back ever since. I'm staying with my grandmother, and she look after my elder brother, younger sister and me. I actually have not met my parents for more than 18 years and only communicate through the phone and social media. Can you imagine, 15 years of not seeing your own parents? 18 years of not having parents around the house, school and life. My grandmother take over my mother's role, she does all the housework for us. She takes care of us. My relative, they are not rich but they sponsor me for my education and pocket money. However, even though I have the love from my grandmother and relatives, I felt that I'm different from others. They have parents accompany them during

On 9 th September 2014, members and guests of Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club turned up for the meeting in a warm manner, as everyone celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival – the theme of the meeting – together. The meeting room was decorated with lanterns with mooncakes served along with the refreshments. The meeting started off with the opening address by our president, Ting Pei Lim, CC. Before she ended her speech, Pei Lim took out her ukulele and played 月亮代表我得心 “The Moon Represents My Heart” by the late Teresa Teng, with the audience started singing along. Technology came in handy when some members took out their smartphones and searched for the lyrics of the song.
